The Harlem Children’s Zone was launched 19 years ago to disrupt the cycle of generational poverty in Central Harlem by creating a unique, birth-through-college network of education and social service programs. Using the Harlem Children’s Zone as a model of excellence, President Obama announced the Promise Neighborhoods initiative, which seeks to replicate this holistic approach across the United States. To date, $200 million in matching federal grants have been given to 48 communities. The NYFPC arranged a meeting for foreign media with Kwame Owusu-Kesse, Chief Operating Officer and Achil Petit, Superintendent of the Promise Academy K-12 Charter Schools. Following the briefing, media toured a first grade classroom in session.
