Fourteen journalists representing nine outlets from six countries toured the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Vaccine Research Cente and Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and received briefings from senior research scientists about NIH activities and demonstrations of clinical testing processes from lab staff. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci described how a meeting to discuss HIV/AIDS with then-President Clinton led to the creation within two years of the Vaccine Research Center; and Clinical Center Director Dr. John Gallin discussed some of the NIH’s contributions to healthcare including the introduction of chemotherapy, the first use of lithium to fight depression, and the development of tests to detect HIV/AIDS in blood.
