Fifteen journalists from eight countries attended a Naturalization Ceremony in the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Cash Room. This ceremony was part of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ annual celebration of Independence Day. More than 7,800 candidates become citizens at more than 100 special ceremonies across the country and around the world between July 1-5. USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas administered the Oath of Allegiance and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew served as the keynote speaker.
The journalists, representing outlets from China, France, Germany, Japan, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland and the Ukraine, interviewed the new citizens both before and after the ceremony. They also interviewed and received a side briefing from a USCIS official about the process of becoming an American citizen.
