In advance of Earth Day, the NYFPC organized an April 16 local tour to Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Six journalists from China, Italy, Japan, Germany, Turkey and France had the opportunity to interview world-renowned climate scientists and learn about their cutting edge research. Lamont-Doherty scientists popularized the term "global warming" decades ago, and predicted the El Nino phenomenon, as well as other climate-related trends. In addition to the briefings, the journalists toured the Core Repository, the world’s largest collection of deep-sea sediments which help scientists to unlock the secrets of past climate cycles. The program underscored the significance of ongoing climate science research, much of it funded by federal grants, that is helping policy makers answer President Obama's call for a robust response to the reality of climate change.
